Make a difference! Inspire others!
Share your experiences using homeopathy, so that everyone can learn from
them! Whether you're an experienced homeopathic professional or a relatively
new home user, you surely have some success stories, interesting cases, or
unique observations. Please share them!
Your audience: Keep them in mind
Homeopathy Today readers are a varied lot--from newcomers who pick
up the magazine at a health store newsstand to homeopathic professionals with
30 years' experience. Please write in a clear, friendly, first-person style
so that the general public has a good chance of understanding you--even if
you're writing on a more advanced topic.
Clinical Topics/Feature Articles
Clinical topics (e.g., homeopathy for hay fever, sinusitis, heartburn,
etc.) and treatment categories (e.g., homeopathy for travel, for holidays,
for seniors, for school kids, for sports enthusiasts, etc.) make good feature
articles because the public can relate well to them. Try to open your article
with something that will draw the reader in--for example, a personal story,
a quote, a short case, or a surprising fact about the topic. Please also include:
- a general overview of the subject (e.g., define the issue or disease,
describe its typical symptoms, tell how prevalent the problem is and who
is most affected, mention typical conventional treatment)
- your clinical experience/observations/pearls
of wisdom (e.g., In my experience, this is hard to treat/easy to treat;
I treat a lot of this/not much of this; I find that certain remedies, remedy
strengths, or dosing protocols work better than others for people with
this complaint, etc.)
- a few short cases or vignettes as examples (Be sure to
include your reasons for prescribing a remedy--see "Clinical Cases" below
for more ideas.)
- homeopathic remedies commonly used for this complaint with
indications for use
- homeopathic self-care advice, if appropriate
- a small amount of common-sense
care/complementary care advice, if appropriate.
For good examples of this
type of article, see any recent issue of Homeopathy
Today for the three main feature articles. Ideal length for such an article
is roughly 1200 to 2200 words.
Clinical Cases
Please write it as a story, not as an outline. First aid and acute
cases work well for Homeopathy Today. More detailed chronic cases
may also be presented, but some summarizing may be necessary because space
does not allow for long cases. Ideal length is 1500 words or less; slightly
longer cases will be considered. You should have permission on file from
the client to present the case and/or enough personal details should be changed
so that the person is not identifiable.
Remember to "make a case" for what you did:
- Give the symptoms you prescribed
upon.
- Mention any previous history such as diagnosis, lab work, conventional
drugs taken.
- Show how you selected a remedy/remedies. Give your reasoning;
cite repertory or materia medica to back you up. A prescription that
is obvious to you may not be obvious to the reader.
- Include follow-up: How
much improvement took place? How long did the improvement last? What
is the person's current condition? Do you have any evidence that the problem
resolved more quickly/thoroughly than might have been expected if homeopathic
treatment had not been used?
- Include any observations or generalizations
you may have about the case, e.g., why you thought it was interesting/why
you thought to present this case/what
Personal Stories
Just tell your story as it happened. Try to include as many of the
details mentioned above in "Clinical Cases" as you can, such as why you
decided to choose a particular remedy, what its effects were, and how
long the effects lasted.
Book Reviews
Ideal length is 750 words or less. In special cases (e.g.,
a long or very complex book), a review may be a bit longer. Please:
- include
a short description of the book
- highlight the book's strengths and good
qualities
- describe its major weaknesses
- compare the book with similar books if any;
what makes this one unique?
- mention the audience for whom the book may
be most useful (e.g., beginners, general public, serious students, practitioners,
etc.)
- provide any other general comments (e.g., what you personally
liked/disliked; what you wish the author had done differently;
what you found most striking or useful; whether the book is a good
value for the cost; whether you would recommend the book and to
whom; what the quality of the book is like regarding paper, binding,
color, size, etc.)
- reveal any strong personal biases or conflicts of interest
(e.g., if you are the author's relative, close friend, business partner
or competitor, etc., it would be fair to disclose this).
Preferred Format for Submissions
Send via e-mail as an attached Word file. Please keep special formatting
in Word to a minimum. Use a single space between sentences. Capitalize the
first letter of a remedy name only (e.g., Nux vomica, not Nux Vomica).
Please include a short bio of yourself--a few sentences/70 words or less. For
longer articles (but not book reviews), please include a color photo of yourself
that we will include as a small headshot with your bio. High quality digital
photos are preferred. Hard copies on glossy photo paper may also be accepted.
We are also happy to receive photos that help to illustrate your article or
story (e.g., a photo of your family if your article focuses on treating your
family members; a photo of your dog if you are telling a story about him; a
photo of you on the trail if your story is about using homeopathy while mountain
climbing, etc.).
