Cases of mumps may start with a fever of up to 103°F (39.4°C), as well as a headache and loss of appetite. The well-known hallmark of mumps is swelling and pain in the parotid (salivary) glands, making the child resemble a hamster with food in its cheeks. The glands usually become increasingly swollen and painful over a period of 1-3 days. The pain gets worse when the child swallows, talks, chews, or drinks acidic juices (like orange juice). One or both sides may be affected.

- Pulsatilla: Lots of mucus and there may be a sensation of a lump or plug when swallowing; pain when swallowing and even when not swallowing and a constant desire to swallow; thirstless and chilly generally; weepy; want to be carried; clingy; warm rooms and becoming warm aggravate; open air ameliorates; low fever and the itchy skin/eruptions are worse for heat; eruptions itching and worse for warmth with white or yellow discharge
- Phytolacca: Throat sensitive to slightest touch; throat sore and pain extends upward toward the ears on swallowing; throat may hurt on sticking out the tongues; glands are hard, painful and swollen; copious saliva/sweating; smelly breath; pains spread to the ovaries/breasts, testes.
- Mercurius solubis: All the discharges are smelly: breath, sweat, stool, urine, saliva; worse at night, in bed; sensitive to extremes of temperature so resting in bed in a moderate temperature gives the greatest relief; intense thirst in spite of a lot of saliva; may even drool; bitter, metallic taste; glands hard, swollen and painful; right side; copious saliva and sweating; mumps pain worse for blowing nose; worse at night; bones in face might aches; similar to Jaborandi but smellier.
