Update on Tsunami Relief Efforts from Homeopaths Without Borders

As we receive it, I will bring you edited news of the work of HWB volunteers assisting the tsunami recovery. -- Jean Hoagland, President

Docs and Dollars

Because you gave dollars, HWB is able to send docs to Sri Lanka. The three representatives from the U.S. are Rene Guarnaluse Arce, M.D. (North American Representative of Homeopaths Without Borders), Eric Udell, N.D of AZ and Denis Marier. These three homeopaths arrived in Sri Lanka on February 12 and began work at a refugee camp at Telwatta. The camp is located about 100 yards from the now famous train disaster where over 2000 passengers were drowned when the carriages were overturned by the Tsunami. The 75 ton Canadian engine is lying on its side next to the track, seemingly undamaged. Doctors already there are working selflessly to help the people who live in tents within a hundred yards from the medical camp. Seven weeks after the disaster they found 16 bodies which had been discovered in the swamp about 200 yards inland, surfacing now that water is slowly drying up.
Rene, in an attempt to introduce himself to the current staff, asked to see the doctor in charge and was directed to a girl about 30 years old – Allison Anderson, from New York. Of Australian origin, Dr. Anderson narrowly escaped danger at the time of the destruction of the Twin Towers. When she saw the disaster caused by the Tsunami she caught the first plane out to Colombo and has been there since. Obviously very tired, she was last seen carrying and cuddling a year old orphan boy who has been adopted by the camp.

I am very happy to know the three HWB members will be able to help her treat the wounded survivors who are suffering from major trauma leading even up to suicide, reported a few days ago from a mother who had lost her whole family.
The U.S. team is now in a hotel known as The Reef, about three miles from the camp, and will commute daily to the camp. They have full Internet facilities and will be in contact.

Kind Regards,
Joe DiLivera, HWB Representative, Sri Lanka

Update from Rene R. Guarnaluse Arce, HWB-NA Board Member and Representative

Dear all,

A lot has happened since the first official note was sent by Homeopaths Without Borders North America (HWB-NA) to the list. In a paralel proccess we asked for volunteers and donations to support the work of those who would leave willingly their livelyhoods to help the survivors of the tsunami in Sri Lanka and thanks to the support of our donors, to Eric Udell (see scnm.edu), and to Denis Marier (see denismarier.com) we have had the opportunity to accomplish this work that may go all the way till the end of March (so far).

HWB could provide 2 homepathic kits, cover the flights (NY-Sri Lanka) and support the shelter, transportation, meals and translation of us three, from the 11th of February in Colombo and the next day at the Peralya Camp to "open" our homeopathic service in Wellamadda and still in other villages.

It is important to acknowledge the support of the ones who help to fund this work, the ones who volunteer (Eric and Denis), to Mr. Joe de Livera and family for being a great hoster and fellow homeopath (thanks Sheri and Leela). For the same reason we urge every one who can do either or both to bolster the work of HWB-International. HWB-France was before us with two homeopaths as well as HWB-Germany.

Because of difficulties with Internet services in our places it will difficult for me to stay current with possible questions and comments, so if there is any suggestion or recommendation you can address the President of the HWB-NA Mrs. Nancy Kelly at nkelly@igc.org

Sincerely yours in Hikkadoa, Sri Lanka,
